I don’t know why it took me this long to listen to NGHTCRWLRS. Allow me to use this time to make a formal apology. The NJ-based alternative band is a patchwork of some of my favorite local Jersey bands. Let’s run down the list: you’ve got Frank DeFranco of Holy City Zoo and Fleeting, Eric Goldberg of All Sensory Void, Brian Goglia of Man On Fire (RIP) and Max Rauch of LKFFCT.

NGHTCRWLRS is the musical equivalent of a killer house party. Each member arrives in an orderly fashion (or chaotic, depending on the track) and brings cases of booze, each with a distinctive flavor. Eric’s your man if you want guitar licks drenched in psychedelics and Frank’s your go-to for those really thick, noisy riffs. I’m used to Goglia’s intense vocals, but I’m thoroughly impressed with his bass skills and Rauch holds it down with some really fun drum fills.

“Smiling” is the perfect melancholic jam for the upcoming season, when we trade in shorts and beach towels for hoodies and sweaters. One thing I love about this song is in the midst of the moody vibes, there’s a refreshingly dark sense of humor. If you haven’t heard the new music by NGHTCRWLRS yet I implore you to not make the same mistake that I did and sleep on this band.

Their self-titled debut is available now on Bandcamp via Sniffling Indie Kids.
